In this installation of “Ask Ken,” a resident wants to know why a boil order was issued after a recent water main breakage but wasn’t issued in the past.

Resident:  The Public Services Department recently issued a boil order for an outage that affected my neighborhood.  We’ve had multiple outages over the years but never a boil order.  Why was one required this time, and what does it mean?

Ken:  The need for a boil order is determined by various factors outlined by the State Health Department.  The most common boil order we experience in the Village is based on water main breaks. When a large enough number of homes are out of water for a declared amount of time that meets the threshold established by the State Health Department, a boil order is required by the State.  A boil water order means the resident should boil any water used for drinking, beverage or food preparation, or dishwashing.  The water should be boiled briskly (rolling boil) for one (1) minute prior to use.  Boil orders that are issued need to stay in effect until samples are tested and cleared by the State Health Department laboratory.  For additional information, visit https://www.healthy.arkansas.gov/programs-services/topics/drinking-water-public-water-system-faqs. Hope this helps.  Thanks!
