GM Explains July 1 Fireworks Display Date

At the Board Retreat on May 2, 2023, HSVPOA General Manager Kelly Hale explained why the fireworks celebration would not be on July 4 this year. Hale said there had been some complaints regarding the date of the 2023 fireworks, and he wanted to address this issue and clarify why the decision was made.

Hale stated that this year, the firework display at Balboa Beach would be on Saturday, July 1. Hale said, “Like many municipalities, they don’t always do them on the fourth, but I will explain my logic.

  1. This date change allows Villagers’ friends and family who work a Monday through Friday schedule not to have to take off work. They can travel over the weekend to enjoy the fireworks.
  2. Not everyone living in the Village is retired. Displaying the fireworks on the weekend could be a better schedule fit for working Villagers who need to rise early the next morning to go to work.
  3. Our staff would like to have Independence Day off to spend with their families and friends. This has not been done in the past. Our employees deserve to spend time with their friends and families on the Fourth of July.
  4. When our employees work on a holiday, we pay double time. This is a cost issue.

The General Manager said the date adjustment was a responsible decision. Hale said, “Our directors ran the models over previous years.” Directors are making adjustments to eliminate overtime pay. “We don’t just willy-nilly things. There was a lot of discussion about this.”

There is a fun-filled calendar to celebrate the 2023 Stars and Stripes Celebration. In addition to the fireworks display, other activities are listed below.
