Late afternoon on June 9, 2022, the Hot Springs Village West Gate was demolished by a driver attempting to avoid crashing into another vehicle. Reportedly, in the far right lane on Hwy 7, a motorist was stopped at the red light. Another motorist, in an attempt to not hit this vehicle, swerved, lost control, and ran into the West Gate Monument.
According to our source, only minor injuries occurred.
The Highway Department or County needs to get rid of the stop light at the entry to the Village. Confusing (especially to Villagers) as you can observe lots of cars stopping at that red light. Cars following should always be aware and keep a safe following distance when entering due to this un-necessary, confusing sign. A flashing yellow would be a good alternative if you have to waste our tax dollars.
Glad there were no serious injuries!
And just the other day I saw some pass the turn lane and then pull up and over the curb of the traffic light island, across the grass and down the other side! It’s like a demolition derby out there.
This person had to be going fast to total that stone wall!! Yikes.
Glad to learn there were no serious injuries, except maybe a car and the sign. Maybe we should take this opportunity to replace the lettering on the sign to something more readable. When that lettering was redone about 5 years ago it was a major disappointment.
Sad to see this happen to our lovely landmark, but glad there wer only minor injuries. Wonder how long it will take to repair.
WOW! What an introduction for our new police chief! Looks like the driver was really traveling! Hope no one was seriously injured.
