Hot Springs Village POA Announces the 2nd Annual Free Dirt Friday

Associate Director of Public Services Matt Broom stated, “Starting Friday, April 12, we will offer residents free dirt for four consecutive Fridays. These dates are April 12, 19, 26, and May 3.”

This very popular 2023 event is returning as the POA makes rich topsoil available to residents again. The topsoil comprises composted leaves (that residents dropped off at “The Pit”) mixed with lake dredge material. The soil may contain rocks and golf balls. [The golf balls are included free of charge. :)] Last year, it was misreported there were no rocks in the soil, but then it quickly became apparent that there were.

You can pick up a load at ‘the Pit’ on Deposito Paseo (off Terlingua) between 8:00 AM and noon each Friday in April, beginning April 12.

As this offer is for residents only, you MUST prove your POA membership by showing your POA card. If you hire someone to pick up and deliver your topsoil, they must be a POA member, or you must accompany them to the pickup.

This is a self-serve operation, and no mechanical equipment will be available for loading due to liability reasons. Only shovels are allowed. Please provide your own shovel and, if needed, containers for your dirt if you are not loading into a trailer or pick-up bed.

Director of Public Services Ken Unger said, “One thing different this year is that, due to the tornado recovery efforts, we will have large equipment coming and going from “The Pit.” during the Free Dirt Friday event. Residents need to be mindful of that. If there are any problems or someone creates access problems for the tornado recovery vehicles, we will cancel the Free Dirt Friday event. So, mind your manners.” No sightseers, please. “We don’t want people wandering around in the area.”

It should be noted that occurring at “The Pitt” during the Free Dirt Fridays will be a controlled burn using an incinerator. This is being used to dispose of the debris from the March 14 tornado. This operation will be located behind the “Free Dirt” area.
