Coronado Fitness Center Beautification Project
In 2006, a remodel of the entrance of the Coronado Fitness Center was completed by the POA, with landscaping virtually non-existent. After the remodel completion, Village Pines Garden Club selected the side and main entrance of the Fitness Center as a landscape project. Rosalyn Halbert, President, assigned Kathy Edmonson, a former landscape architect, to design a plan for the project. Phase 1 Design Program was submitted and approved by the POA.
The club’s main objective was to provide a unified and harmonious design in scale with the size of the building and focus attention on the main entrance. The selection of plants and labor provided by the club’s Fitness Center Committee resulted in project completion in May 2007. A careful selection of plantings like nandina, holly, azalea and large flowering crape myrtle trees remain today.
For several years a major drainage problem required extra maintenance of the area, including replacement of a large tree and plantings. The drainage problem was an issue that required additional supervision until 2009.
Hardworking chairpersons and club members have maintained this project for the past several years. Maintenance includes the replacement of shrubs, plants, and trees, weeding, and seasonal planting of annuals. Donna Rawley chaired the project for several years until 2021. Currently, Allison Allen and the committee provide supervision and maintenance of the project.
Village Pines is celebrating 50 years of landscape service in the Village. Presently, they maintain eight projects. The 9th project and anniversary legacy is landscaping the fountain area in front of the Coronado Center. This project is scheduled for completion in November of this year. Village Pines Garden Club is grateful for Community support of their fundraisers for new and established beautification projects.
